Winfrey “Wimp” Gene Mitchell, 88, of DeRidder LA, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.
Winfrey started out working for the City of DeRidder water department, then he became a volunteer fireman in the 1950’s. He worked as a fireman for many years and was appointed as the Chief on February 14, 1983 and retired on December 31, 1986. After his retirement from the fire department, he worked at East Beauregard High School, DeRidder High School, Beauregard and Westwood nursing homes, he also drove for the auto auction. “Wimp” loved to read, watch football, especially the New Orleans Saints and the LSU Tigers, but his favorite pastime was watching the Game Show Network. He is loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Nelda Anger and Mark, Carolyn Moses and Paul, Barbara Moses and Don, Jeannie Mitchell and fiancé, Justin Rangel, all of DeRidder, LA, Debra Dawn Hudson of Singer, LA; fifteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris V. Mitchell; son, Gerald Cooley; parents, Eugene and Alice Mitchell; sisters, Darlene Hickman, Rose Mallett; brother, Raymond Mitchell.
A private memorial service will be held at Whitaker Cemetery.
