It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Murphy Gene Ashworth of DeRidder, LA, who left us peacefully on January 31, 2026, at the age of 88. Born to Shelby and Rosetta Burgess Ashworth on September 21, 1937, in Singer, LA, Murphy lived a life filled with love, family, and hard work.
A proud graduate of DeRidder High School, Murphy was a gifted athlete who excelled in every sport he tried his hand at. After high school, he dedicated over thirty years of his life to the powerline industry, where he worked for Red Simpson. His commitment to his job and the community was unwavering, and he was respected by all who knew him.
Upon retiring, Murphy enjoyed a simpler life filled with morning coffee and listening to the Swap Shop. Most days, you could find him in his favorite recliner, happily watching old westerns and sports with his beloved fur buddy, Rhett, by his side.
Murphy is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Judith Wilson Ashworth, daughters, Susan Cryer and her husband, Johnny and Kim Mount; son, Michael Ashworth and his wife, Renee Ashworth; five grandchildren, Gerad Plummer (Hannah), Meredith Berry (Scott), Adam Mount (Tristan), Beau Mount and John Michael Ashworth; seven great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who will cherish the many memories created with him over the years.
Murphy was preceded in death by his parents, Shelby and Rosetta Burgess Ashworth; his sisters, Verna Mae Rutherford and Gladys Duncan; his brothers, Earl, Osby and R.S. Ashworth; and his son-in-law, Clifford Mount.
Funeral services will be held at Myers Colonial Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 10:00 AM, where friends and family can gather to celebrate Murphy's life. Michael Clark will officiate the service. A public viewing will take place on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the same location. Following the service, Murphy will be laid to rest at Good Hope Cemetery in Singer, LA. Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Jay Price and grandsons, Gerad Plummer, Adam Mount, Beau Mount, John Michael Ashworth and Scott Berry.
Rest in peace, Murphy. Your legacy of love and laughter will live on in all who had the pleasure of knowing you.
