Merle Edward Bassett of Leesville, LA, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on July 3, 1946, in Leesville, Merle lived a life rich with experiences and love for family and friends.

Merle proudly served in the Marine Corps from September 15, 1965, to September 14, 1969, spending 13 months in Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic and machine gunner. After his service, he embarked on a fulfilling career as a fiber optic specialist in telecommunications, where he traveled across the country for over 25 years, handling installations, repairs, and maintenance.

He had a passion for Ford Broncos, owning several throughout the years, and in his younger days, he found joy in hunting and fishing. Merle was known for being a quiet and private man, but those who knew him understood that he was honest and straightforward-if you wanted the truth, he was always willing to share.

Merle is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Gwen Bassett; daughters, Robyn Bassett and Keli Bassett Perkins and Chip, all of Leesville, LA; sisters, Linda Nowell of Marshall, TX and Barbara McLaughlin and Jim of Graham, WA; and grandchildren Hannah Perkins Hagan and Ryan and Luke Perkins; great grandchildren, Aubrie and Landry Hagan; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love and truth that will be cherished by those who knew him.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents, William and Frances Bassett; brother, William Earl Bassett, Michael Glen Bassett, Randy Allan Bassett; lifelong best friend and cousin, Russel D. Rhodes.

The family will announce plans for a memorial service to celebrate Merle's life in the near future. Friends and family are encouraged to share their memories and stories, honoring a man who lived life fully and loved fiercely.
