It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John L. Vernier, who left us on September 8, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on April 9, 1939, in DeRidder, LA, John was a proud member of the community, known for his entrepreneurial spirit and his vibrant storytelling.
A cherished husband, father, and friend, John devoted many years to his work in the retail industry. He owned two convenience stores in DeRidder, as well as locations in Anacoco and Leesville, serving folks with a smile and a friendly chat. His entrepreneurial journey also included selling insurance in the area, reflecting his commitment to helping others.
Before venturing into self employment, John spent 19 years managing Sears, shaping not only his career but also his character as a workhorse determined to provide for his family. He proudly served in the National Guard, demonstrating his dedication to service and community.
John had a real passion for deer hunting. He enjoyed countless trips into the woods, always ready to recount his humorous and often entertaining hunting stories. Many in the community will fondly remember his laughter and the warmth he brought to those around him.
John leaves behind his beloved son, John "Johnny" Vernier and his wife, Monica of Orange, TX; grandchildren, Caleb and Brianne Vernier of Vidor, TX, Benjamin and Liz Vernier of Burleson, TX, Sean Larken of DeRidder, LA, Richele and Logan Felty of DeRidder, LA, Kayce and Casey Marler of DeRidder, LA; great grandchildren, Lyla, Arli and Neva Vernier, Augustus "Gus" and Jasper Vernier, Ellie Bourque, Haelyn Vernier and Lincoln Flety, Royce, Kinlee and Maysen Marler and a host of nieces and nephews who will carry on his legacy.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Leta Vernier; wife, Mary Frances Vernier; son, Robert Kaven Vernier.
To honor John's life, a public visitation will take place at Myers Colonial Funeral Home on Friday, September 11, 2026, starting at 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and his funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 10:00 AM. After the service, John will be laid to rest at Lewis Cemetery in DeRidder, LA. Benjamin Vernier and Brother Jason Hoychick will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Caleb Vernier, Benjamin Vernier, Sean Larken, Logan Felty, Casey Marler, David Vernier and Josh Vernier.
In this difficult time, we invite family and friends to gather and share their love and memories of John. His spirit will live on in the lives he's impacted and the stories that will be shared for years to come.
