With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Chavis Sr., a devoted father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who left this world on May 17, 2026, at the age of 72. Born on April 9, 1954, in Lafayette, LA to Leonard and Albertha Chavis. John lived a life marked by kindness, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.
John was known for his exceptional skills as a carpenter, a trade he cherished and took great pride in. Throughout his life, he loved working with his hands, creating and building not just structures but memories that would last a lifetime. His craftsmanship was a reflection of his dedication, and he was often sought after for his expertise, and an eye for detail.
Left behind to honor his legacy are his beloved children; John Chavis Jr. (Jessica), Velvet Colton (Johnny), Qiana Chavis, Michelle Chavis Wright, and Rose Mary Ashworth(Quinndale), 14 grandchildren; DeAndree Archield, Antria Archield, BreAnna Archield, Cecil StewartIII, Keondra Porter, Jasmine Walker, John Chavis III, Craig Wright Jr., DeAjsia Ashworth, Quinndale Ashworth Jr., Nyeshia Ashworth, and Essence Johnson., and 21 great-grandchildren, and siblings; Joseph Chavis(Pronolia), Patrick Chavis(Renee), Donald Chavis(Gwendolyn), Ronald Chavis, Harold Chavis, Nellie Rose Hays, and Mary Ethel Archield. Each of them carries a piece of John’s spirit within their hearts, a testament to his impact and the love he shared with every member of his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Pamela Chavis, Siblings; Velma Brown, Charles Chavis Sr. and great-grandchild Caylix Stewart.
To celebrate John’s life, a public viewing will be held at Myers Colonial Funeral Home on Friday, May 22, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a memorial service starting at 1:00 PM. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by John are invited to attend and share in the celebration of a remarkable life well-lived. After the memorial service, cremation has been entrusted to Myers Colonial Funeral Home.
John Chavis Sr. will be profoundly missed, but his memory will forever shine brightly in the hearts of those he leaves behind. May he rest in peace.
