Jessie Nelson

Jessie Nelson, 85, passed from this life on July 10, 2009 at his residence.  Born September  10, 1923, he was a native of Singer, LA. He remained a resident for most of his life, except while he served proudly in the Army Air Corp during World War II in the South Pacific.  During his younger years, he worked in the forestry industry, hauling stumps to the Newport Plant in DeQuincy.  He graduated from DeQuincy Trade School as a furniture maker and upholsterer. Later, he retired from the Beauregard Parish School Board. For a number of years he worked offshore in the oil industry and for the Beauregard Parish Maintenance Road Crew.  He was an Avid LSU and New Orleans Saints fan and the Singer Hornets number one fan. Jessie was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Never meeting a stranger, he was a loyal friend to everyone that he came in contact with.  He was always a practical joker; he loved people and enjoyed making them laugh.  He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was the proud father of one son: Joe Nelson and wife Carolyn of DeQuincy, LA; and three daughters: Alma “Rusty” Matthis of Singer, LA, Freddy Nelson of Huntington, TX, and Rita Hays and husband Jim of Warren, TX.  He had fourteen grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren. He has one living sister: Billie Perkins of Beeville, TX. He was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church and rarely missed a service. As an avid gardener, he loved supplying many friends and relatives with fresh farm vegetables every year, as long as his health allowed.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife and companion of forty-seven years: Lillian Hyatt Nelson; his father: Wade Hampton Nelson; mother: Loudella Ashworth Nelson; and sixteen brothers and sisters.
