James Kennedy Koss—known lovingly as Jim, Dad, Pappaw, or Pop—passed away peacefully on December 28, 2025, in Merryville, Louisiana. He lived a full and independent life, remaining active and vibrant until his very last day.
Mr. Jim was born on February 28, 1931, in Lapier, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his mother, Loretta Koss; his beloved wife, Juanita Perkins Koss; and his son, Michael James Koss.
He is survived by his daughters Robin (Troy) Bryant and Laura Koss, and daughter-in-law Abbie Gayle Koss. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Charlie (Fayme) Bryant, James (Lauren) Koss, Chelsea (D’Andre) Harbin, Megan (Matthew) Thompson, Sarah (Austin) Rich, Hannah Koss, and Adaline Koss; as well as eleven great-grandchildren and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Jim graduated from Comstock High School in Comstock, Michigan, and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge. After his military service, he met the love of his life, Juanita, and they married in September 1958, sharing 46 wonderful years together until her passing on December 10, 2002.
Throughout his life, Jim worked diligently in various roles, including as a paper mill worker, a production line worker for Upjohn Pharmaceutical, and later for a Michigan-based banking institution, where he continued working well into his eighties.
Jim had many hobbies, but woodworking was his greatest passion. He found joy in creating beautiful pieces and gifting them to loved ones—his craftsmanship reflecting his generous heart. He also loved electronic devices and was known for always having the latest gadgets, whether he could operate them or not.
In 1970, during an Easter church service, Jim placed his faith in Jesus Christ. In his own words: “That evening I got saved, and it’s been the best thing in my life.” His faith remained central throughout his life. In recent years, Jim was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church in Merryville, Louisiana, where he loved attending worship and sharing fellowship.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 424 Hwy 111 Merryville, LA, on Sunday January 4th, 2026, at 2:00 PM, led by his dear friend and pastor, Bro. Jim Miers.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ministry of your choice.
