Edna Woods

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Ms. Edna Woods, who left us on November 21, 2025, at the age of 91. Ms. Edna was born on May 29, 1934, in Jena, Louisiana, and moved to DeRidder at a young age, where she would become a cherished matriarch and esteemed member of her community.

 Ms. Edna’s early life was marked by her dedication to education at Beauregard Parish Training School, where she excelled in chorus and business, graduating in 1952. She embarked on a successful career in business and retail that spanned over two decades, becoming known for her exceptional skills as a buyer and salesperson at West Brothers Department Store and Walmart. Her talents also extended to serving as a trusted insurance agent, where she positively impacted the financial well-being of many families in her community. Ms. Edna culminated her career in retail as a customer service manager in 2006. Although she was small in stature, Ms. Edna’s faith and determination made her a powerful force within her community. 

A lifelong member of New Hope CME Church, she devoted herself to serving as President of the Missionary Board, President and Vice President of the Stewardess Board, President of the Usher Board and Treasurer of the church building fund. Ms Edna’s commitment to civic engagement also found her actively participating in various civil rights concerns and community initiatives, exemplifying her passion for equal opportunity. 

She was married to Dezel Woods Jr. for 56 beautiful years until his passing. Together, they raised a loving family, which includes their son Alfred Woods (wife, Philisa Finley Woods), daughter Barbara L. Etienne (husband, Justinian Etienne), Kayla S. Woods, Webster D. Woods (wife, Phyllis Woods), and Della R. Brand (husband, Steve Brand). Edna also leaves behind a legacy of love through her 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a beloved Godson, alongside a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many adopted sons and daughters within the DeRidder community.

 A public viewing will take place on November 29, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at New Hope CME Church, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Ms. Edna will be laid to rest in Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, Louisiana. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her. 

Ms. Edna Woods will be lovingly remembered for her selfless spirit, unwavering faith, and the indelible mark she left on her family and community. May she rest in peace.
