Carolyn Brewer Stephenson

Carolyn “Curli” Everett Brewer Stephenson passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 9, 2022. She was born on November 9, 1943, in DeRidder, Louisiana to parents James and Florence Brewer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Betty Spence, her brother Bobby Brewer and sister-in-law Peggy. She is survived by her son Russell Stephenson, his wife Rachelle and their children, her son Bradford Stephenson, plus brother-in-law Archie Spence and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

While growing up in Louisiana, Carolyn loved spending her time outdoors. She loved playing various sports including basketball and tennis, also taking camping trips where she would spend time with her very close-knit family and friends: like her aunts, and many cousins and close friends including Carol and Margie who were like sisters.

Carolyn was always studious and intelligent, excelling in academics. She attended DeRidder High School and went on to attend Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana and graduated in 1966. After finishing college Carolyn went to work for the Xerox Corporation where she enjoyed the distinction of becoming one of the first two female sales representatives for the Houston Xerox center. Carolyn decided after working for Xerox to move into teaching, which had been a life-long passion. She would then travel to Europe to work as a teacher at the American Embassy School in Bonn, Germany for three years. Carolyn would then return to the United States and receive a Masters Degree in Library Sciences from the University of Colorado. In 1990 Carolyn would begin teaching in various schools in Texas and would eventually spend many years as a librarian and media specialist at Huffman Middle and High School, where she was loved and remembered fondly by her students after she retired in 2012.

Carolyn was an incredibly caring, generous woman and wonderful mother who would always put her sons first. She loved spending time with her family and friends, always happy to offer her time and home to provide for others. She was an avid reader of books, player of games and loved taking photos and creating keepsakes to document her life and family.  She always dreamed of running her own B&B in which she would fill each room with different themes, including miniature villages she loved to collect. Carolyn loved to celebrate holidays and would put tremendous effort into decorating her home and cooking meals to bring enchantment and joy to all.

Carolyn was also a devout Christian woman, who loved attending her church Forest Cove Baptist. She was aways willing and ready to donate her time to help the church wherever she was needed. Even through personal tragedy and loss, she remained strong in her faith and love of God and her family. She was and inspiring example for anyone who knew her.

Visitation will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022 at 1:00 PM until the time of service at 2:00 PM at Diamond Baptist Church in DeRidder, LA.  Pallbearers will be family and friends. Burial will follow at Lewis Cemetery in DeRidder, LA.
