Billie Jean Duck Cates

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Billie Jean Duck Cates, who left us on September 22, 2026, at the age of 89. Billie was born on November 9, 1936, in Quitman, Louisiana, and spent her life spreading joy and knowledge as a beloved teacher in Calcasieu Parish Schools for an incredible 32 years.

Billie had a special gift for nurturing young minds, and her love for children was evident in every classroom she touched. Beyond her teaching career, Billie was passionate about traveling, with many adventures in her younger years that filled her life with cherished memories.

For over 30 years, Billie was a devoted member of the Boulevard Church of Christ in Lake Charles, and in her final years, she embraced her new church family at Bilbo and Roberts Church of Christ in DeRidder.

Billie was also an avid reader who found joy in getting lost in stories, which complemented her great love for life and learning.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Herman Cates of Deridder, LA; their children, Mike Cates and Shannan of DeRidder, LA, Mindy Gonsoulin and Brian of Aledo, TX, Marty Cates and Janice of DeRidder, LA; grandchildren, Ryan Gonsoulin and Bradie, Bo Cates and Jacey, Luc Cates and Bethany, Brody Gonsoulin and Brianna, Hannah Cates; great grandchildren, Rylie, Charlie, Lucy and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Billie will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Billie was preceded in death by her parents, James and Nouris Duck and three brothers.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Beech Spring Cemetery in Quintman, LA, where we will gather to honor and celebrate her wonderful life. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Billie Jean Cates will forever be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and unwavering spirit. May she rest in peace.
