Alice Ruth Hanspard Garner, 84, of DeRidder, LA passed from this life on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
Alice Hanspard Garner was born to the late Lucy and Hiram Hanspard on August 2, 1940 in Quitman, Mississippi. At an early age she united with the Mt. Gillend Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Hardaway. In 1955, she moved to DeRidder, Louisiana with her parents, Lucy and Andrew Bolden. She then united with the Starlight Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. K. E. Robinson. She graduated from George Washington Carver High School. In 1963, she met and married the late Charles R. Garner, to this union three children were born. In 1975, after traveling with her husband in the army, they returned to DeRidder to make it their permanent home. Sis. Garner was led to unite with the Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church where she labored for the Master until she was called home from labor to reward. Sis. Garner was a faithful member and tried to live by the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. She wasn't a big talker, but was missed when she wasn't there. Sis. Garner let her light shine by her deeds, talk and walk. She attended Sunday School, B.T.U., midweek and mission. She served as a Sunday School teacher, mission president and choir member. She was always willing to do what she could to help others along this Christian way. She was a member of the New Light District Association. Within the Association she served many years as one of the vice presidents of the Mission department. In 2001, she retired from Walmart to care for her husband. She will be missed by many and cherished by her loved ones left behind. She leaves behind three children, Darryl Garner (Sylvia-d) of DeRidder, Louisiana; Dwayne Garner (NeKiesha) of Augusta, Georgia; Aretha Hohn (Jerrod) of Shawnee, Oklahoma; one sister-in-law, Elaine Hanspard of Oakland, California; one as a brother, Emmit Bartee (Betty-d) of Mississippi; one as a sister, Luieda Mitchell (Calvin) of Virginia; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Garner; brother, Archie Hanspard; parents, Lucy and Andrew Bolden and Hiram Hanspard. Visitation will be held Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at Sunrise Missionary Baptist Church in DeRidder, Louisiana. Pastor Alvin Peters will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity. |
